8 Books in 8 Weeks
Red Hood’s Revenge [B&N | Mysterious Galaxy | Amazon] comes out in exactly eight weeks. As the excitement builds and we all eagerly count down the days — you are eagerly counting down the days, aren’t you? — I wanted to try something a little different.
So every week from now until Red Hood comes out, I’ll be giving away an autographed copy of one of my books. The rules will change from week to week, depending on what I’m in the mood for. One week I might give a book to a random Twitter follower. The next I might ask you to complete the following poem:
Roses are red,
Goblins are blue,
Authors are ________
__________________.
One way or another, I’m hoping it will be fun, and I get to give away free books. For this first week, I figured we’d start off simple: all you have to do to enter is comment about something that makes you smile. (Anonymous commenters, please make sure I have a way to reach you.)
I’ll pick a winner next week to receive his/her choice of one of my published fantasy novels. Anyone can enter, though if I get a few overseas winners early on, I may have to start limiting it to U.S. entries due to shipping costs.
Have fun! (And if you felt inclined to spread the word, I certainly wouldn’t object.)

Great contest Jim – waiting to read Red Hoods Revenge! 🙂
The thought that it will be out soon makes me smile. The not far off release of the next book in a series (by any author) that I enjoy brings a smile!

Learning something new. Anything really. Whether it is something I didn’t know in computers, my family history, gaming, or just the new things you learn being a new parent.

I smile a lot: When I look at the picture of my granddaughter on the desk in front of me, when I crack open a new book (up next: The Stepsister Scheme), and knowing I have Red Hood’s Revenge on preorder!
Great contest idea, Jim, and good luck to everyone!

I always smile when I see dogs sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle, staring at the door their owner went into and waiting for them earnestly to come out 🙂

My daughter using a quote or a movie reference that shows she HAS been listening to her ’80s-oriented ubergeek Dad, whether she wants to admit it or not. (Sorry we couldn’t make Penguicon this year – I’m thinking it’s back on for 2011, though.)

There are many things to smile at or about. Just this morning the youngest dog pestered the oldest till she growled and went after him. He takes off across the yard tail up just as happy as he can be. He got what he wanted, a game of chase. I and the neighbor both laughed at him.

The future. Even when things get kinda bleak, the overall direction of the future both in the near for all of us currently and in the long run for humanity, does make me smile.
(Felt like if I had to pick one thing, I had to go more profound. Otherwise, A LOT of things make me smile:
– the future
– my kids (except when they make me growl)
– my wife
– going back to grad school
– dessert
– Community on NBC (I’m not a paid shill, they just have hit their stride with the actors and writing so that show is the first in a while that makes me laugh until I cry)
– silly YouTube videos of laughing babies
– sunshine
– thunderstorms
– a job well done
– imagination
– my cozy bed
– Beethoven’s 9th
– lots of other music
– did I mention dessert? 😉
– etc.

What makes me smile.
Oh, so many things.
My daughter, my husband, my dog and my cats. My life. Life in general. Good Thai food, sushi, a bird, sea lions…
I don’t have time to continue the list, alas, the daughter has an appointment she can’t be late for 😉

Horses make me smile. A fresh, clean notebook with a pretty cover makes me smile. A stack of new books to read. A sunny day. Sleeping cats. Dog grins. Friends and family. My kids. I have lots of reasons to smile. 😀

Ooh, a signed copy~~~ 😀 Since you never come out to California for readings/signings, this may be my only chance~~! 😀
The thing that probably makes me smile the biggest (in fact, what makes me happiest in life) is when I get a rush of creative inspiration. Like, when I’m walking across the parking lot to get to my car, gazing up at a rare clump of fluffy clouds (not too many clouds in our pollution-clogged, desert-like climate out here, so it’s a treat) and suddenly an image comes to me of some place or some moment or some meaningful line of dialogue that would be awesome in my novel/WIP story. Seriously, the thrill of excitement I feel at times like those and the big, stupid, uncontrollably goofy grin on my face that it causes is so completely unwarranted and doubtlessly odd-looking in my blah office setting that I have to make efforts to “casually” turn my face away if someone’s passing by, etc. So yeah, moments of inspiration/thinking about my creative works definitely make me smile. 🙂

Free stuff makes me smile.
Writing something that surprises me in a good way makes me smile.
My wife makes me smile.
My kids make me smile (when I’m not ready to choke them to death for not listening).
My cat makes me smile.

I remember my best friend, who passed away two years ago, talking at length about a series she had recently gotten into (it was the In Death series by JD Robb). I was going through an extremely rough period and when things become a bit much she would keep me company, holding my hand through the roughest of spots…talking about random things like those books she read, her cats, being vegan, and her dreams for the future. It’s bittersweet to remember those touching moments but I can’t help but smile to myself, smile about how fortunate I have been to know and have her in my life.
Sorry, mushy but lol…..it makes me smile now.

Good music makes me smile. Thinking about my upcoming road trip to see good music played live makes me smile, as does the fact that I’ll be seeing friends I only see once or twice a year! 🙂

What makes me smile is noticing the simple things of life, such as laughter, a good book, a funny shaped cloud, or the last piece of cheesecake.

Roses are red,
Goblins are blue,
Authors are so very silly,
Especially if they’re goats named Billy.

My little guy is very new…and I smile and laugh when he goes to the bathroom (the messy one) because he has the biggest smile on his face. Its like he thinks he has done something very exciting. It makes me smile cause I think its funny as hell. The worse it is the bigger the smile.

Awesome idea about the contest. There are a lot of things that make me smile – my fiance, my pets, new books, and geeky jokes top among them.

Looking forward to the book, of course. As for me, watching episodes of M*A*S*H makes me smile. And Mandy. And my best friends Matt and Sean. And the comedy of Demetri Martin. And the Raiders of the Lost Ark theme music. And my niece and nephew.

Enjoy’s finding Josca references in “Hero of …” — probably need to force myself to finish reading that someday … maybe when I run out of great Jig books!

Finishing something. I’m a huge fan of that moment when I get to hit the final key, sign my name for the last time, put the last clean dish on the rack, whatever. Being DONE always feels so good, like winning a tiny bit against entropy.

The new Doctor Who. I am a die-hard David Tennant fan, but Matt Smith is worthy of flying the TARDIS.

Sending The Stepsister Scheme to a friend who was getting annoyed by everyone around her trying to rescue her from a rough patch she was going through.
She really got a kick out of the Do we look like we need rescuing?? line.

It makes me smile when my 2-year-old tells me a story.
They all begin with “once upon a time” and end when something hatches from and egg 🙂
